Basic traffic course and driving lessons
What does the basic traffic course include?
If you want to take driving lessons or practice driving, you must complete the basic traffic course and be at least 16 years old. Once you have completed the course, you will receive proof that you are allowed to practice drive. The basic traffic course lasts 17 lessons spread over at least five sessions. To take this course, you must have turned 15 or be in at least the 10th grade of lower secondary school.
The course is mandatory (step 1) and follows the traffic training regulations, chapter 8.
It is common for all driving license classes and provides the foundation for further training and private practice. The goals are primarily aimed at increasing the student’s understanding of risk and the traffic system.
The course includes both theory and practice.
Traffic training

What is the basic traffic course?
The basic traffic course is mandatory for anyone who is getting their driver’s license for the first time. Getting a driver’s license is a process.
There are four main stages of driver training, in addition to practice driving. The goal is to become a safe and responsible driver, able to navigate traffic safely for everyone. Success depends on a mix of technique, understanding, awareness, and reflection.
The time it takes to be ready for the driving test varies for each individual, but most complete the process within 3 to 9 months.
How long it takes often depends on:
How well you follow the training plan and study the theory
How much access you have to a driving school or private practice
How consistent you are in your lessons
How many hours of driving practice you get overall
How old do I have to be to take the basic traffic course?
You can take the basic traffic course from the age of 15.
If you are 25 or older, you are exempt from the full course but still required to complete the sections on accident responsibilities, emergency response (first aid), and night driving (darkness demonstration).
What does the basic traffic course include?
The course consists of both theory and practical lessons. After completing the basic traffic course at Majorstuen Driving School, you will have a solid understanding of how traffic works and how to navigate it safely.
How long does the basic traffic course last?
The basic traffic course consists of 17 class hours spread over at least five sessions. To participate, you must be at least 15 years old or currently attending the 10th grade of lower secondary school.
Is the basic traffic course mandatory?
Yes, the basic traffic course is mandatory for anyone who is applying for a driver’s license for the first time. It provides a foundational understanding of what it means to be a driver. You will gain essential knowledge about the goals of traffic training in Norway, as well as the key traffic rules, the role of the driver, human behavior in traffic, the driving process, duties in case of an accident, accident prevention, and driving in the dark (including the night driving demonstration).
What is the night driving demonstration (darkness demo)?
Night driving is a required part of the basic traffic course and takes place in a car under real traffic conditions. The driving instructor drives while you, as the student, observe as a passenger. We recommend completing the night driving session as early in your training as possible.
If you take the basic traffic course between March 16 and October 31 without completing the night driving session, your course certificate will only be valid during that period. To be allowed to practice driving between November 1 and March 15, you must first complete the night driving session.
