What does Class B training include?

Here you can see what the training covers. The training is divided into 4 stages (“Trinn”) with individual adaptation, to give you the best possible foundation for success.

Stage 1: Basic Traffic Course, first aid and night-driving demonstration

Before you can practise-drive or take driving lessons, you must have completed the Basic Traffic Course (“Trafikalt grunnkurs”) and have turned 16. The Basic Traffic Course is mandatory for everyone under 25 who wants to practise-drive with a companion.

Stage 2: Car handling

Before you drive in traffic, it is important that you master the car well enough to direct your attention toward other road users.

Stage 3: Traffic part

At this stage you will learn to drive in varied traffic and become almost fully independent.

Stage 4: Final training

During this stage you should be skilled enough to drive responsibly and in good interaction with other road users.

Stage assessment lesson: In a stage assessment lesson, the student considers whether the goals for the stage have been reached and whether the basis for further training is sufficient.

Individual adaptation: The need for training varies from student to student, so the planning of the training programme is adapted to each individual student’s experience and ability to learn.

Frequently asked questions

Who can take a Class B driving licence?

Before you can practise-drive or take driving lessons, you must have completed the Basic Traffic Course. The Basic Traffic Course is required for everyone aged 15 to 25; those who have turned 25 only need the first-aid course and the night-driving demonstration.

The training is the same, but fewer people drive manual cars today due to environmental requirements and the emissions of petrol/diesel cars.

If you take your licence on an automatic, you may only drive automatic cars. To drive manual cars you must take a new practical driving test. If you take your licence on a manual car, you may drive both automatic and manual cars.

Most people find it a little easier to learn to drive with an automatic.

Training always starts with a 90-minute driving lesson to assess your level. How many lessons you need in total is individual and is adapted to each student. The mandatory training is as follows: 45 minutes of stage-2 assessment, 60 minutes of stage-3 assessment, a 180-minute safety course on the practice track, and a safety course on the road (13 × 45 minutes = 585 minutes). The mandatory training totals about 19.33 school hours (45 min each). Beyond this, time is needed to drive to the safety course and practice track, which are located at Nesodden or north of Fetsund.

The Basic Traffic Course lasts 17 teaching hours spread over 5 sessions.

To take the theory test you must be 17.5 years or older. You can take the practical driving test on the day you turn 18.

The safety course on the practice track is mandatory for everyone seeking a Class B licence. The course helps the student further develop the skills needed to avoid accidents, partly through exercises that cannot be carried out on the road.

The safety course on the road (formerly rural-road driving) is also mandatory for everyone seeking a Class B licence and helps the student further develop accident-avoidance skills through independent practice on the road. The mandatory training alone is usually not enough to reach the main goal of Class B training; it must be supplemented with sufficient practice through a driving school, private practice-driving, or both.
